Laboratory instruments are powerful, precise, and - for the most part - completely disconnected from the AI revolution happening everywhere else. While LLMs can write code, generate reports, and orchestrate complex workflows, they cannot tell a liquid handler to aspirate 50 microliters from well A1.
That is changing.
The Integration Gap
Most labs run on a patchwork of vendor software. Each instrument ships with its own control application, its own data format, its own API (if you are lucky). LIMS and ELN systems sit on top, aggregating results - but they are passive. They record what happened. They do not drive what should happen next.
The typical integration stack looks like this:
- Instrument - proprietary control software, often Windows-only
- LIMS/ELN - data aggregation, sample tracking, reporting
- Scientist - the human glue connecting everything
The scientist is the bottleneck. They read the LIMS output, decide the next step, walk to the instrument, configure the run, and wait. AI should be doing this.
Why Traditional APIs Are Not Enough
Some instrument vendors have started exposing REST APIs. That is a step forward, but it creates a new problem: every integration is bespoke. Connect AI to a Tecan liquid handler? Write a custom adapter. Now connect it to a Hamilton? Write another one. Each vendor, each instrument model, each software version - another adapter.
This does not scale. Labs have 10, 20, 50 different instruments. You cannot write and maintain 50 custom integrations.
MCP - The Missing Standard
The Model Context Protocol (MCP), originally created by Anthropic, solves this at the protocol level. Instead of writing N custom integrations, you write one MCP server per instrument. The AI agent speaks MCP natively. One protocol, universal connectivity.

The AI agent can now discover this tool, understand its parameters, and call it - no custom integration code needed on the agent side.
